The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven Boys (#1) ended with Ronan confessing to his buddies Gansey, Adam, Blue and Noah that Chainsaw, his pet raven was in fact a construct of his dreams brought to life when he awoke. And yet there it was alive and kicking as any living creature ought to. The second book in the series, The Dream Thieves, is centered around Ronan’s terrifying magical dreams where ancient trees speak to him in latin (and another strange language). He also talks to a strange girl and battles nightmarish creatures intent on killing him in his sleep.
In the real world, a bunch of as-yet unnamed people are hunting for the Greywaren (what Ronan actually is) without the realising it’s a person and not a thing. It appears that Niall Lynch, Ronan’s father shared Ronan’s gift and the price he paid for keeping the secret was the expiration of life. A Gray Man, a deadly assassin has come to Henrietta and we can rule out sightseeing as what takes him there.
We also get to see the changes in Adam’s personality, since his self-sacrifice to Cabeswater in The raven Boys. Throughout all this, the search for Glendower is getting closer and closer to unearthing something more concrete than smoke and mirrors. As a side note, the search for Butternut took a backseat as Cabeswater appears to be under some form of distress.
Same as in The Raven Boys, Maggie Stiefvater’s characters are rock solid in The Dream Thieves. I love the dynamics of the Psychics who make up Blue’s family. The author hinted at Persephone’s brush with powerful forces in her past. I love Calla’s vitality. And you should see how Maura handles the Gray Man, it’s just too awesome. I am hoping to get some answers on the mysteries surrounding Cabeswater and Glendower in book 3. I am not sure I want a book 4 nonetheless. Lovely series once you get into the story.
